Savannah College of Art and Design announces Sand Arts Festival winners
Alyssa Couturier and Jesse Herndon won first place in the Gray’s Reef Sea Creature Contest.
The winning sand sculpture was created by Elizabeth Winnel, Will Penny and Jonathan Yoerger.
The castle ruin by Thomas Michael Battjes, Robert Fleming and Yanni Davros won first place in the sand castle competition.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design held its annual Sand Arts Festival Friday, May 2, at Tybee Island. Thousands of visitors viewed temporary sand art masterpieces created on the island’s north beach. More than 300 SCAD students competed for cash prizes.
The following is a complete list of winners:
- First place: “Armor-plated Whale,” Elizabeth Winnel, illustration, Lansdowne, Ontario, Canada; Will Penny, painting, Woodstock, Ontario, Canada; Jonathan Yoerger, printmaking, Carmel, Ind.
