SCAD hosts Innovative Teaching and Learning Symposium

SCAD,Savannah,Susan Zwirn, Innovative Teaching and Learning SymposiumSAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design department for innovative teaching and learning announces Susan Zwirn, Ed.D., as the final speaker in the Innovative Teaching and Learning Symposium series April 30. The lecture will take place in the Oglethorpe House ballroom, 201 W. Oglethorpe St., 6-7 p.m. A reception will follow the lecture. Both events are free and open to the public.

Zwirn is the fine arts education coordinator at Hofstra University. In her lecture, titled “The Artist/Teacher Conundrum,” Zwirn will discuss how artists who teach face dual roles of artist and educator, and how many of them experience contradictions in their career development that impact both of these roles. Zwirn will explore the ways in which educators can realize their professional aspirations as well as the extent to which teachers believe creative production is central to their ability to be effective teachers.

On May 1, Zwirn will address SCAD graduate students in the Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Fine Arts programs at Smithfield Cottage, 118 W. Hall St., 4-5:30 p.m. Local art teachers are invited to attend and participate in the discussion.

The Innovative Teaching and Learning Symposium series is held in conjunction with the SCAD School of Liberal Arts, the college’s graduate studies department, foundation studies department and professional education department.
