SCAD spring exhibitions lineup showcases Chinese-American artists, innovative cartographer and visiting professor

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design highlights Chinese-American art educators, installation artist Janice Caswell, and painter and printmaker Steve Locke in its spring exhibitions schedule.

"Across the Divide III" features work by Chinese-American artists serving as faculty members in American colleges and universities. In a diverse range of pieces, the artists reflect on socioeconomic changes in China and engage in thoughtful self-examination via cultural assimilation in the United States. The exhibition, on display April 17-June 14 at Pei Ling Chan Gallery and Garden for the Arts, 324 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., coincides with events leading to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

SCAD, Savannah, Janice Caswell Exhibition, 2008 Janice Caswell, known for her mental maps and wall drawings, will use mixed media to create a site-specific installation. Titled "Remapping Savannah (and other stories)," the exhibition will continue Caswell's exploration of cartography, using a blend of drawing, collage and photography to form a unique view of Savannah. The installation will be on display at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., April 5-June 1.

Steve Locke served as a visiting artist and painting professor at SCAD during winter quarter. In "RAPTURE/New Work," on display at Hall Street Gallery, 202 W. Hall St., April 4-28, he presents a series of paintings and lithographs he produced during his time at the college. The lithographs were created with the assistance of SCAD printmaking student volunteers. An exhibition reception will take place April 4, 5-7 p.m., and the gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

April 4-June 1 — "Remapping Savannah (And Other Stories)" by Janice Caswell
Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St.
Janice Caswell’s drawings and installations represent mental maps, an investigation of the mind's peculiar ways of organizing memories. She attempts to trace the edges of recalled experience, plotting the movement of bodies and consciousness through time and space. The exhibition is presented as part of SCAD Style.

April 4-28 — "RAPTURE/New Work" by Steve Locke
Hall Street Gallery, 212 W. Hall St.
The SCAD exhibitions and painting departments present "RAPTURE/New Work" by Steve Locke, visiting artist and painting professor during winter quarter. These new paintings and lithographs were produced at SCAD during Locke's professorship.

April 8-May 1 — "Travel Portfolio"
May Poetter Gallery, 342 Bull St.
"Travel Portfolio" features photographic images and drawings by SCAD students and staff members during an off-campus course trip. Their work documents landscapes, people and cultures in Argentina, Peru and Uruguay.
