SCAD announces two upcoming lectures at the Trustees Theater

SCAD, Atlanta, Chip Kidd, 2008SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents a lecture by graphic designer Chip Kidd Wednesday, April 16, 7:30-9 p.m., as part of the Trustees Lecture Series. The SCAD architectural history department presents a lecture by historian Paula Henderson Monday, April 21, 6:30 p.m., as part of the Architectural History Lecture Series. Both lectures take place at the Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St., Savannah, Ga. These events are free and open to the public.

Chip Kidd has been called by USA Today "the closest thing to rock star" in graphic design, and his work in both the design and literary worlds is iconic. His book jacket designs for Alfred A. Knopf (where he has worked since 1986) have helped spawn a revolution in the art of American book packaging. His work has been featured in Vanity Fair, Eye, Print, Entertainment Weekly, The New Republic, Time, Graphis, New York and ID magazines, and he regularly contributes visual commentary to the op-ed page of The New York Times. In 1998 he became a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and in Fall 2003 Newsweek included him in its first issue devoted to design. "The Cheese Monkeys" (Scribner, 2001), Kidd's debut novel, was a national bestseller as well as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. His second novel, "The Learners," was published in February 2008. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Paula Henderson's lecture, "The House and the Landscape," explores the Tudor sensibilities and their affect on how people look at house and home. Henderson, author of "The Tudor House and Garden," explains how throughout the Tudor period houses became more "outward looking," with views embracing the gardens and landscape, demonstrating the owner’s increasing command of his estate. Natural themes also dominated interior decoration, with trompe l'oeil decoration becoming en vogue, delighting and tricking visitors. Tudor sensibilities also saw living nature brought into the house in the form of sweet-smelling herbs and flowers. A book signing in the Trustees Theater lobby will follow the lecture.
