Printmaking professor Debra Oden exhibits work in Romania

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Debra Oden, a printmaking professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design, is one of two Americans whose work is being exhibited in Romania for the third International Experimental Engraving Biennial March 15-May 15.

More than 150 artists answered the call for entries to join this international discussion on the future of printmaking and to share unconventional or experimental techniques. Prints from 66 artists from Morocco, Japan, Poland, Puerto Rico, and the United States were selected for display.

Oden said the call for entries reminded her of an avant-garde “call to arms” to participate in the future of printmaking as an art. Her own work documents the process of living. A single mother raising two children, she captures natural engravings from her environment — the grooves on a used table, the Magic Marker scribbles of a toddler on his body and drawings by young children. She said, “I have a really serious side that thinks life is pretty hard, but it's also wonderful. I have an appreciation for the duties of taking care of a family. It's difficult, but the acceptance and celebration of life comes out in my prints." Her abstract prints provide a historical record and examine deeper themes of conflict and resolution.

In addition to being exhibited in Romania, Oden’s prints are on display and available for purchase at shopSCAD, 342 Bull St, Savannah, Ga. Her work will also be included in the LaGrange National XXV Biennial Competition, the Manifest’s International Drawing Annual 2007 and the Turman Larison Contemporary Print Invitational later this year.

The official opening of the 3rd International Experimental Engraving Biennial was held Saturday, March 29, at the Brancovan Palaces Cultural Center, Mogosoaia.
