International children’s book illustrations exhibition on display at SCAD
 SAVANNAH, Ga — The Savannah College of Art and Design will host “Teatrio: Beyond the Mirror,” an international exhibition and competition from Venice, Italy, showcasing children’s book illustrations, March 7-April 11, at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
The competition invites illustrators from around the world to submit art for children’s books based on an invented theme. Out of 500 entries, the top 30 are selected by a panel of judges from different countries and artistic backgrounds. SCAD illustration professor Mohamed Danawi said, “Judges look for work to be suitable for the children’s market, but also expressive and experimental examples of fine art.”
The top 30 pieces travel as part of an international tour to cities across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.
In 2007, “Teatrio: Beyond the Mirror” had illustrators develop a fairy tale based on the concept of a mirror. Susan Maier, M.F.A illustration candidate, was the overall winner, and 11 other SCAD students were included in the exhibition. Alumna Sarah Goodreau (B.F.A., illustration, 2007) earned second prize, and Shiho Hoshino, B.F.A. illustration candidate, earned one of four special mentions.
“For the first time in the history of this international and prestigious competition, the first and second prizes went to American candidates,” said Danawi, who has organized the entries for SCAD for the past five years. “Both are students of ours.”
Named one of Kaplan’s “25 cutting-edge schools with an eye toward the future,” the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., and in Lacoste, France. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs also are offered online through SCAD-eLearning. The college offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Urban Design degrees.
