03/05/2008 SCAD industrial design department hosts Design Charrette 2008 SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design’s industrial design department will host Design Charrette 2008 in conjunction with the Boston firm Continuum, an award-winning design and innovation consultancy. The event will be held March 9-13 at the Gulfstream Center for Furniture and Industrial Design, 3116 Montgomery St., Savannah, Ga., and will feature Continuum speakers who will address “The Other 90 percent.”
The intensive research and design workshop will examine the challenges that face 90 percent of the world’s population living in developed nations. Design innovations created through the charrette encompass a broad set of modern social and economic concerns and support responsible, sustainable economic policy.
Speakers include Kristin Sjo Gaber, Theresa Chiueh, Dan Buchner, Rick Robertson, Nicki Hiatt, Kristin Johnson, Beth Johnson and Jasmin Bowers from Continuum. More than 260 students will be broken up into teams to combat issues including education and childcare, transportation and mobility, recreation and entertainment, communication and social status, enterprise, food and nutrition, peace and stability and personal identity and self-image. Each day the speaker will deliver a new message — or variable — for students to consider when conceiving their designs.
The SCAD industrial design department prepares students to determine the form and function of products people every day — designing them to suit user needs while also considering the demands and limitations of production. The graduate and undergraduate programs were ranked third and fourth in the nation, respectively, by DesignIntelligence's 2008 edition of "America's Best Architecture and Design Schools." Both programs were ranked No. 1 in the South and among the top 10 in the East. The undergraduate program also was ranked No. 2 in the Midwest.
Named one of Kaplan’s “25 cutting-edge schools with an eye toward the future,” the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., and in Lacoste, France. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs also are offered online through SCAD-eLearning. The college offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Urban Design degrees.
