SCAD-Atlanta to exhibit the modern designs of Karim Rashid

SCAD, Atlanta, Karim Rashid, industrial design, exhibitionATLANTA — The Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta will host “Karim Rashid: From 15 Minutes into the Future” by internationally renowned designer Karim Rashid March 14-May 18. The exhibition will be on display at the ACA Gallery of SCAD, located at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga. Rashid will give a lecture at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Auditorium April 3, 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the ACA Gallery of SCAD. Both events are free and open to the public.

Rashid is one of the most significant cultural shapers in the world today. He is a leading figure in the fields of product design, interior design, fashion, furniture, lighting and art, known for his uncanny ability to visually describe contemporary culture with his democratic design sensibility.

In “Karim Rashid: From 15 Minutes into the Future,” SCAD-Atlanta will showcase more than 50 of Rashid’s designed objects that have been put into production. Everything from tableware to chess sets to watches will be on display.

Rashid was born in Cairo, Egypt, and raised in Canada. He now practices in New York. Designing for an impressive array of clients including Alessi, Georg Jensen, Umbra, Prada, Miyake and Method, Rashid is radically changing the aesthetics of product design and the very nature of consumer culture. In addition to his many designed and produced products, Rashid has successfully entered the realm of architecture and interiors as demonstrated by the design of the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and the Semiramis Hotel in Athens, Greece, which won a Sleep.05 European Hotel Design Award.

Rashid was awarded a 2005 honorary doctorate from Corcoran College, the 2005 Pratt Legends Award, 2004 A.D. Dunton Alumni Award of Distinction from Carlton University’s alumni association, 2002 ID Magazine Annual Design Review Best of Category, and 2003 Best Retail Store in the U.S.A. His work is in the permanent collections of major museums around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Rashid has taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Ontario College of Art & Design, and is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences globally. He has published several books, including his most recent title, “Design Your Self: Rethinking the Way You Live, Love, Work and Play” (Collins Design, 2006).

"Karim Rashid: From 15 Minutes into the Future” was organized by Charles Reeve, curator and assistant professor at the Ontario College of Art & Design, in collaboration with Karim Rashid and Karim Rashid’s studio.
