01/24/2008 SCAD students rank high in national survey in class preparation, engagement with differing views, races and values SAVANNAH, Ga. — In the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement, Savannah College of Art and Design freshmen and seniors ranked well above national averages in a study that measures their level of academic engagement. In a variety of indicators, such as the amount of time spent preparing for class and the amount of effort produced to meet an instructor’s expectations, SCAD students were 10-25 percentage points higher than their peers.
In the area of enriching educational experiences, SCAD students also ranked very high in their interactions with other students of different races, ethnicity, religions, politics and values.
SCAD freshmen also ranked higher than the national average in the percentage that have already made a class presentation, and they made a strong showing in the area of active and collaborative learning. Additionally, SCAD seniors participate in study abroad experiences at nearly twice the national average.
SCAD students also ranked higher than the national average in the following areas:
- 78 percent of SCAD freshmen and 87 percent of seniors often asked questions in class or contributed to class discussions.
- 71 percent of SCAD freshmen and 76 percent of seniors often had serious conversations with students who were very different in their religious beliefs, political opinions or personal values.
- One quarter of SCAD freshmen and one third of seniors have done or plan to do independent study.
- 67 percent of SCAD freshmen and 80 percent of seniors have done or plan to do a culminating senior experience or senior project.
- 90 percent of SCAD freshmen and 85 percent of seniors say the college emphasizes study and academic work.
- 73 percent of SCAD freshmen and 67 percent of seniors say they have received prompt feedback from faculty on their academic performance.
- More than two thirds of SCAD freshmen and three quarters of seniors say they often put together ideas from different courses when completing assignments. A quarter of SCAD freshmen and one third of seniors say they have read five or more unassigned books for enjoyment or academic enrichment.
- More than half of SCAD freshmen and 69 percent of seniors say they often attend exhibitions, plays, dances, concerts, theater or other performances.
- Nearly three quarters of SCAD freshmen and seniors say SCAD emphasizes attending on-campus events and activities.
In addition, SCAD freshmen specifically ranked higher than respondents at other colleges in the following areas:
- Nearly 90 percent of freshmen say they plan to do a practicum, internship or field experience.
- More than one third say SCAD helps them cope with nonacademic responsibilities.
- Nearly half say SCAD provides support to help them thrive socially.
- Nearly 85 percent say they received good to excellent academic advising.
SCAD seniors ranked higher than the national average in the following areas:
- 56 percent say they often worked with other students on projects during class.
- More than 70 percent say they often discussed grades or assignments with an instructor.
- 46 percent say they often talked about career plans with a faculty member or adviser.
- Nearly one third say they often discussed ideas from readings or classes with faculty members outside of class.
- Close to 90 percent say SCAD enabled the acquisition of knowledge to use computing and information technology.
