Photography exhibition documents drugs, crime in Gloucester

SCAD, Savannah, Andrew Moxon Gloucester photography Exhibition, 2007SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Tales of Gloucester,” a photography exhibition documenting the changing social culture of rural Gloucester in England, by Andrew Moxon Dec. 5–Jan. 3 at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St.

In “Tales of Gloucester,” Moxon documents the lives of those caught up in the economic changes associated with the rise in drug usage. Gloucester has gained a new “mini economy” based on drug sales, crime and prostitution – where average male life expectancy has fallen from 68 to 57 in less than a generation, according to the Gloucester County Councils Social Census Report on the Westgate Quarter of Gloucester, published in July 2007.

“The portraits are not judgmental or glorifying, but are simply observations from an individual photographing his neighbor,” Moxon said in his artist statement. All the images were shot within half a mile of his home in Gloucester.

Moxon is a professor in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He is also a visiting lecturer in photography at Zurich International School in Switzerland. In 2008, he will begin guest lecturing at the University of Gloucestershire. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe and in the United States, with pieces belonging to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh and the National Portrait Gallery in London permanent galleries.

“As a photographer my personal work has always been documentary related – I am drawn to the camera as it allows me an opportunity to observe mankind’s bizarre activities without becoming actively involved – a form of noncommittal cowardice courtesy of the cameras viewfinder – the constant outsider,” Moxon said in his artist statement.
