SCAD-Atlanta students design winning mannequins in art contest

ATLANTA — Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta student Andrea Gill designed the winning entry in the eon at Lindbergh “Bring Art to Life” mannequin art competition. Gill, an undergraduate graphic design major from Atlanta, created “Connections,” which was unveiled last night at the Museum of Design Atlanta in conjunction with the Turner First Thursday event.

“We are all connected, either through the human touch or through wires and cyberspace,” said Gill. “The overlap of these personal and cybernetic connections is what defines our personalities. My mannequin reflects the beauty of one of these overlaps and cyber/personal juxtapositions.” Gill will receive $2,000 to donate to her favorite Atlanta arts organization and $2,000 to put toward tuition. Gill chose Eyedrum, a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 and dedicated to developing contemporary art, music and new media in its gallery space. The Eyedrum gallery is located in downtown Atlanta at 290 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive S.E.

Saray Gill, an undergraduate interior design major from Atlanta, and Andrea Gill’s sister, created the runner-up mannequin titled “Real Estate.” Gill used her experience as a realtor to explore the artistic and visual scope of the real estate boom in Atlanta, navigating urban chaos through known and unknown sites in the city.

Team Mary Wall and Trevor McCarl designed “My Heart is a Remote,” another runner-up mannequin. Wall, an undergraduate fibers major from Fayetteville, and McCarl, an undergraduate animation major from Peachtree City, depicted modern urban living and urbanism through human relations. The team used collaged images to reveal various interactions during travel and exploration of Atlanta, also drawing attention to the role of media. The two runners-up will receive a $500 gift certificate each to use for educational supplies.

The “Bring Art to Life” competition, sponsored by eon at Lindbergh and presented in partnership with SCAD-Atlanta and the Museum of Design Atlanta, allowed SCAD-Atlanta students to transform mannequins previously used to market Atlanta’s eon at Lindbergh condominiums into a new public installation. Instead of art as advertising, SCAD-Atlanta students shaped the mannequins into their impressions of today’s urban living by painting, dressing or distorting the mannequins, blurring the lines between life and art. A total of 25 finalists from the “Bring Art to Life” competition, including the winning and runner-up designs will be on display at MODA April 5–19.

The mannequins originally were part of a guerilla public art installation showcasing more than 100 mannequins en masse that launched the “Bring Lindbergh to Life” marketing campaign for eon at Lindbergh. To see the original display, visit www.pushhere.com/eon.
