SCAD presents annual fashion show with Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs, Fashion Show 2007SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design will honor fashion legend Marc Jacobs at the college’s annual fashion show Saturday, May 19, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley and SCAD President Paula S. Wallace will present Jacobs with the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8 p.m. show.

In May 2000, the college honored Talley with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was renamed to include Talley’s name and has been presented successively to fashion legends Oscar de la Renta, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, Tom Ford and Vera Wang. In 2004, Zac Posen was honored with the André Leon Talley New Look Award. Talley is a member of the SCAD Board of Trustees.

"Marc Jacobs is indeed a giant of the fashion world," said Wallace. "His influential and innovative designs have left an indelible mark on the industry and aspiring designers worldwide. We are delighted that he is taking an interest in the next generation of designers at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and we are thrilled to honor his extraordinary body of work with the prestigious André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award."

Talley added, "Marc Jacobs is one of America's originals. He defines fashion with his work under his own label and for the past decade has created at Louis Vuitton a new world of fashion. His brilliant collections are always fashion-forward, establishing him as a leader, not a follower."

As a design student at Parsons, Jacobs was the recipient of some of the school’s highest honors: the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble, the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble and Design Student of the Year. In 1984, before presenting his senior collection, Robert Duffy approached Jacobs thus setting the stage for a partnership, called Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc.

Honored six times by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Jacobs' collection includes the Marc Jacobs Collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs and shoes, handbags, eyewear, fragrances, watches, accessories and a home collection.

More than 80 undergraduate and graduate students are currently vying for one of about 50 prestigious slots in the fashion show, which has become one of the top student fashion shows in the country. Selected by a jury process, the student’s work is critiqued every step of the way from sketches to garments by some of the top professionals in the fashion industry.

The 2007 SCAD fashion show matinee at 4 p.m. is $20 per person, $10 per person with a SCAD ID and for the 8 p.m. show are $50 per person and $25 per person with a SCAD ID, and are limited to four per person for both shows. Tickets can be purchased beginning May 1 at the SCAD box office, 216 E. Broughton St., or charged by phone at 912.525.5050.

In addition, a live webcast of the 8 p.m. show will be broadcast at www.scad.edu/fashionshow.
