11/01/2006 Savannah Film Festival honored Rex Reed Nov. 1: "Absolute Wilson," "Pittsburgh," "Illeanarama" and "Volver" screened SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design and sponsored by Memorial Health, the Savannah Morning News, the City of Savannah, Coca-Cola and Bessemer Trust presented Rex Reed with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Entertainment Journalism Nov. 1, 7 p.m., at Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St.
A critic for the New York Daily News, the New York Post and the author of eight film industry books, Reed has represented Vogue, GQ, Holiday and Women's Wear Daily as a film critic and writes weekly film reviews in the New York Observer. Reed’s tribute preceded the Director's Choice screening of, "Volver," a surprise screening of a highly anticipated film due out this fall.
"Absolute Wilson," which screened earlier in the day, stars Arnold Aronson, William Burroughs and David Byrne, and chronicles the epic life, times and creative genius of Robert Wilson, one of the most mysterious artists of our era.
Starring Jeff Goldblum, Ryan Magnussen and Patrick Bradley, "Pittsburgh," explores what happens when an international movie star “goes rogue,” turns his back on his manager and follows his heart to star in a two-week run of "The Music Man" in his hometown of Pittsburgh.
"Illeanarama," starring Illeana Douglas, Jeff Goldblum and Justine Bateman, screened after "Pittsburgh" at Trustees Theater. Protagonist Illeana is forced to find work in a local Hollywood supermarket where she learns to adjust to life in the supermarket of the stars, after realizing that other Hollywood actors have beat her there.
Professional film screenings included "The Hip Hop Project," "Dry Sky," "The Gymnast" and "Gnome." Panel discussions held throughout the day on Wednesday at Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St. included "Emerging Roles in Performance: The Future of Acting in Cinema" and "So, You Have and Idea for a Television Show?" "Stop by. Shoot Film," an informative workshop presented by Kodak designed for anyone interested in discovering how to use motion picture film, was held at Lucas Theatre.
Morning and afternoon screenings and panels are $5 for the general public, $3 for students, seniors and military, and free for SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD ID. The normal price for tickets to the evening screenings will be $10 for the general public and $5 for SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD ID.
