10/31/2006 Savannah Film Festival honored Walter Hill Oct. 31: "The Lives of Others," Bringing Balanchine Back," "Geronimo: An American Legend" screened SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design and sponsored by Memorial Health, the Savannah Morning News, the City of Savannah, Coca-Cola and Bessemer Trust presented Walter Hill with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Directing Oct. 31, 7 p.m. at Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St.
Classic Westerns, action-packed thrillers and buddy comedies all mark Hill’s unique writing, directing and production style. Famous for co-creating and producing the "Alien" films, directing "48 hours" and receiving Emmy and Directors Guild of America Awards in 2005 for the pilot "Deadwood," a groundbreaking neo-Western, Hill most recently directed "Broken Trail," starring Robert Duvall.
Following the tribute to Hill, the festival screened "The Lives of Others:" a political thriller and human drama starring Martina Gedeck, Ulrich Mühe and Sebastian Koch, that traces the gradual disillusionment of Capt. Gerd Wiesler, a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany’s all-powerful secret police.
Earlier in the day "Bringing Balanchine Back" and "Geronimo: An American Legend," screened at the Lucas Theatre. Starring the cast of the New York City Ballet "Bringing Balanchine Back" tells the story of New York City Ballet's historic visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, to perform at the famed Marinsky Theatre, while the epic "Geronimo: An American Legend" starring Neil Canton, Michael Glick and Walter Hill, tells the story of the final months of the U.S. Army's Geronimo campaign of 1885–86 and the events that led to the surrender of the legendary Apache Geronimo.
Panel discussions held throughout the day at Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St., included "Networking: The Reality of Life," "Machinima II" and "Young Directors' Forum." Professional and student films "Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride," "Earthman," "PEZheads," "Guide Dog," "Disappearances" and "Second Thoughts" also screened.
Morning and afternoon screenings and panels are $5 for the general public, $3 for students, seniors and military, and free for SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD ID. The normal price for tickets to the evening screenings will be $10 for the general public and $5 for SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD ID.
