SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design and sponsored in part by Memorial Health, the Savannah Morning News, the city of Savannah, Coca-Cola and Bessemer Trust, presented Guillermo Arriaga with an Award for Achievement in Cinema Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Trustees Theater, 216 E. A college professor for 25 years, Mexico City native Arriaga has directed, produced and written short films, documentaries, television series, and radio and television commercials. Arriaga’s other achievements include winning the Golden Palm for Best Screenplay at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" (2005), which will screen Oct. 29 after Tommy Lee Jones accepts his Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting, and authoring three highly acclaimed novels, one of which he recently turned into the screen adaptation, "El Bufalo de la Noche" (2006).

Following Arriaga's tribute, film festival participants had the opportunity to witness Arriaga’s complex narrative structures, intense stories and characters during the screening of "Babel."
