SCAD-Atlanta presents Best of the Fest

Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta presents Best of the Fest, featuring award-winning films from the 2005 Savannah Film Festival, Thursday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m., in The Hub. Movie-style popcorn and soda will be served.

At Best of the Fest, two films will be screened:

HBO Films Student Competition winner
Best SCAD Student Competition winner
"The World Outside"
Directed by Josh Lind and Kevin Phillips
A young lever-pulling factory worker finds reason to escape the tedious daily routine of industrial manual labor after meeting a bright-eyed beauty who works at the factory next door, his company’s main competition. After deciding to make his move, he is faced with the most complex tasks of his life, from disguising his identity to fooling both factories to avoiding the watchful eyes of the building officials — all just to get a little closer to the one girl he could love.

Best Documentary winner
HBO Films Producer Award winner
"Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea"
Directed by Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer
There was a time when the Salton Sea, tucked into the southeast corner of California, was known as the Riviera of the West–a haven for Hollywood jetsetters and vacationers alike. Originally created by accident, it is now one of the nation’s worst ecological disasters. A hearty few have hung on there, though, hoping for help to come along and restore the lake to its former glory. Eccentricity abounds in this surreal story, part history lesson, part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities you’ve ever seen.

The Savannah Film Festival, presented by SCAD and held Oct. 29–Nov. 5 in Savannah, featured more than 50 films, selected from more than 600 entries in the categories of feature, short, animation, documentary and student competition, which are submitted from all over the world. The featured screenings represent a variety of independent filmmakers, while a cross section of workshops, lectures, receptions and special events gives the festival participants an opportunity to meet colleagues active in all areas of film production.

From feature-length films to two-minute shorts, the festival presents a full range of cinematic creativity. In addition to student work and films by independent filmmakers, past professional screenings have included such notable films as "The Cooler," "Searching for Debra Winger," "The Battle of Shaker Heights," "The Triplets of Belleville," "Amélie," "Talk to Her," "In the Bedroom" and "Waking Life." Each year, the festival also presents achievement awards to outstanding individuals in film. Past recipients have included director Arthur Penn, actress Thora Birch, director/producer Sydney Pollack, actress Debbie Reynolds, actress Jane Fonda, and director/producer James Ivory.

Lind will be on hand for a question-and-answer session following the screening.
