Student designers partner with The Limited for the holidays


The Savannah College of Art and Design continues its collaboration with the nationwide clothing retailer The Limited, debuting a jewelry collection featuring original designs by nine SCAD students. "It is absolutely surreal," said Jewelry and Objects student Emily Morrow, "to have my designs be manufactured. But in reality, it was a true collaboration of professors, students, and The Limited jewelry team - all helping to create the final designs."

For the second consecutive year The Limited reached out to SCAD for this partnership, both for SCAD's reputation as a leading design institution and its emphasis on developing marketable skills. "The Limited's mission is to help our customers achieve their personal success - fulfilling their potential and looking great every step of the way," said Linda Heasley, CEO of The Limited. "Which is why we were so excited to continue to partner with the SCAD - to give students priceless, real-life experience in the fashion industry and ultimately, provide our customers with the cutting edge designs they've come to expect from The Limited. This collaboration is truly a unique partnership of commerce and design."

The partnership between the iconic women's retailer and the nation's premier art and design university was devised to provide students with real business experience and offer Limited customers fresh designs. "By having professional field partners like The Limited in the classroom," said Jay H Song, professor and chair of Jewelry and Objects, "it allows SCAD students authentic industry experience to simulate the professional world demands in the safe confines of the classroom."

SCAD students work with The Limited team

To kick off this collaboration, executives from The Limited met with SCAD students in the jewelry and objects department in January 2012. Taking into account the company's creative and business requirements, the students created hundreds of designs inspired by The Limited's Holiday 2012 concepts, slowly narrowing down the list to 20 designs from each of the nine students. "When I was designing," said Lauren Funk, a recent graduate of the Jewelry and Objects program, "I thought of how the piece would be worn in real life and how comfortable it would be to wear." During a formal presentation in spring 2012, the students' final designs were evaluated on their commercial and creative aspects.

Twenty-six jewelry styles were selected for production for this capsule collection and they debuted at The Limited's Oglethorpe Mall store on Sept. 25. The pieces are also available at thelimited.com. Based on sales performance, The Limited expects to expand the collection to additional stores in the future.

SCAD: The University for Creative Careers

The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution conferring bachelor’s and master’s degrees at distinctive locations and online to prepare talented students for professional careers. SCAD offers degrees in more than 40 majors.

Jewelry and Objects Program

The SCAD jewelry and objects program prepares students for a variety of careers in industrial, fine art or entrepreneurial settings. Students gain a foundation in traditional jewelry, metalsmithing and silversmithing techniques through a diverse yet detailed curriculum and acquire an understanding of new technologies, concept development, electronic design and rendering, and production methods.
