The Savannah College of Art and Design is pleased to announce that Cecelia Hall has joined the sound design faculty in the School of Entertainment Arts. A former senior vice president of post-production sound at Paramount Pictures, Hall was the first woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing on Top Gun in 1987. She won the Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing for The Hunt for Red October in 1990.
"Cece's arrival at SCAD is emblematic of the university's commitment to expose students to industry leaders who can teach them the fundamentals they need to be successful in their chosen field," said SCAD Chair of Sound Design David Stone. "I had the pleasure of working with Cece on Top Gun, and I know first-hand the incredible value of learning from someone with her level of skill and expertise."
Hall brings her 35 years of experience to three fall quarter courses at SCAD: Introduction to Sound Design, Post Production Sound and Special Topics in Sound Design. She will introduce students to various careers in sound design by arranging for them to interview sound designers, mixers and executives who are working in Hollywood. Hall also teaches sound design at UCLA.
"I am incredibly impressed with the Savannah College of Art and Design's sound design department. There's nothing like it in the United States," said Hall. "The depth of courses, creative atmosphere and faculty are top flight. I wish I had gone to school here."
Stone noted that Hall, who was responsible for recording the jets at various airbases for Top Gun, contradicts a common misconception that sound design is a male-dominated field.
"To learn the craft from a woman who has a phenomenal track record of success and leadership in Hollywood is an exciting opportunity for our female students in particular," said Stone.
SCAD is the only university in the United States that confers the B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A. degrees in sound design for media. Hall joins a stable of award-winning faculty in the School of Entertainment Arts.
The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution conferring bachelor’s and master’s degrees at distinctive locations and online to prepare talented students for professional careers. SCAD offers degrees in more than 40 majors.
