SCAD presents annual Sand Arts Festival May 10

May 2, 2013, 8 p.m.

The Savannah College of Art and Design's schools of Fine Arts and Foundation Studies present the annual Sand Arts Festival 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, May 10, on Tybee Island’s North Beach.

SCAD sculptors will showcase their talents by molding sand into jaw-dropping, extraordinary works of art, and with nearly $5,000 in prize money at stake, the 2013 installment is expected to draw hundreds of students, alumni, faculty and staff from across all SCAD departments.

The community is invited to this annual seaside celebration where competitors work individually and in teams and a panel of judges selects the winners. Last year’s event featured more than 400 participants and attracted nearly 5,000 visitors.

Sand Arts competitors can choose from a number of categories including sand castle, sand sculpture, sand relief and wind sculpture, and three winners will be selected from each. The Gray's Reef best underwater creature, realistic or fantasy, will be selected from entries in the sand sculpture, sand relief and sand castle categories, and will be presented by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation through Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April, which many consider SCAD’s homecoming. Competitors and visitors alike are encouraged to share their Sand Arts photos using #scadsand.

Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules. The event is free and open to the public.
