SCAD performing arts produces "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot"
The Savannah College of Art and Design department of performing arts will present the provocative play, "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot," directed by SCAD performing arts artistic director Sharon Ott, Thursday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Mondanaro Theatre, 217 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
"The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" by Stephen Adly Guirgis tells the story of Judas as he awaits trial in purgatory. Whether Judas enters heaven or burns in hell rests upon the witness testimony of saints and sinners including Satan, Pontius Pilate, Mother Teresa and Sigmund Freud. Told in the poetic language of the streets of New York, "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" contemplates the consequences of choice and the limits of forgiveness.
The Philadelphia Inquirer called it "an ambitious, complicated and an often laugh-out-loud religious debate," and Variety called it "A real jaw-dropper. [Guirgis's] imagination is dazzling and his command of language downright thrilling."
"Stephen Adly Guirgis is one of the most vibrant and exciting new writers of the 21st century, and 'The Last Days of Judas Iscariot' is his most complex, ambitious, and eloquent play," said Ott. "The play takes a close look at one of the Bible's most notorious sinners and with Guirgis' customary laugh-out-loud style finds in the story of Judas a very modern, very moving sense of existential pain."
"The Last Days of Judas Iscariot," contains adult language and situations and is for mature audiences. Evening performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 through Saturday, Oct. 20, and a matinee be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 with senior, student or military ID. The 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 performance will be free with a valid SCAD ID.
Tickets can be purchased at the Savannah Box Office at the Trustees Theatre, 216 Broughton St., by calling 912.525.5050 or online at tickets.savannahboxoffice.com.
