SCAD fashion student Angelique Matthews was honored with the 2013 Geoffrey Beene National Scholarship Award at a ceremony held Jan. 8 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel ballroom in New York. Matthews is one of only four winners from universities across the country of this prestigious $30,000 scholarship package.
"I am so ecstatic," Matthews said. "I woke up the next morning feeling like I had been dreaming. I am so grateful for all the opportunities the YMA FSF Geoffrey Beene scholarship fund has provided me. I could not have gone this far without all my mentors from SCAD."
Competitors were challenged to create a new and innovative pop-up store using the newest technology. Matthews created "Tread," a pop-up store experience bringing together the fashion needs of the extreme sports community with the mobility of a food truck - a store that would travel from one extreme sports location to the next.
She designed a collection of extreme-sports wear for both men and women and put together a comprehensive business plan that included start-up costs, marketing and advertising plans, and expansion strategies.
Also honored that evening were six SCAD students named YMA Scholars. Each received a $5,000 scholarship. Those students are:
