Performing arts opens spring season with comedy May 2-5

SCAD performing arts is set to open the spring season May 2, with the comedy “She Kills Monsters.”

Savannah College of Art and Design’s performing arts department will open its spring season May 2, with the comedy “She Kills Monsters,” by Qui Nguyen. Directed by Martin Noyes, the play runs May 2-5 at Mondanaro Theater, 217 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

In “She Kills Monsters,” boring Agnes's life is turned upside down by the loss of her family in a car accident. Bereft, she stumbles upon her late sister’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, embarking on an action-packed quest to save her sister’s soul. Coming face-to-face with homicidal fairies, raunchy ogres and bloodthirsty cheerleaders, Agnes discovers a side of herself she never knew existed. Nguyen’s touching comedy combines real life, fantasy and 90's pop culture in the search for the superhero in us all.

The New York Times called the play “deceptively breezy and rather ingenious,” and said, “The whole enterprise is kind of dopey and kind of invigorating and kind of remarkable. It will slash and shape-shift its way into your heart.” The Chicago Tribune called it “clever, funny, moving, lively and delightfully geeky ... a ready embrace of pop culture, high-school speak and 'High Fidelity' cool, and a mission to redeem gaming geeks everywhere.”

Nguyen is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and cofounder and co-artistic director of the Off-Broadway Theater Award-winning Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company of New York City. His honors include two GLAAD Media Award nominations, two New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations for Best Production, a 2012 Theatre Communications Group Young Leader of Color honor, being named one of's People of the Year and recognition as a “Downtown Playwright to Watch” by Time Out New York Magazine.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m., May 2-4, and 3 p.m., May 5. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 with senior, student or military ID. The May 2 performance is free to those with a valid SCAD ID. Seating is limited.
