Denise Francis wins Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon Poster Contest
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce that Denise Francis, M.F.A. graphic design student, is the winner of the sixth annual Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon Poster Design Contest. Francis, a graduate student from Fairburn, Georgia, took first-place honors in the contest and received a $1,500 scholarship toward tuition at SCAD. The winning poster will be the official running poster of the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon, taking place on March 18. The Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon is owned and operated by the US Road Sports and Entertainment Group.
"My idea was to use hand-made elements, so I hand-painted everything," Francis said about her winning poster. "The small dots represent all the people that come together to run in the events and show that everybody involved is a winner."
Contest and competition
On Sept. 30, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 10:01 p.m., 64 students in SCAD's graphic design program participated in the poster design contest. The goal of the contest was for students to create a piece of art in 13 hours and 1 minute (coinciding with the 13.1 miles of the half marathon) unique to Georgia that incorporates the passion, health and fitness of running and the excitement of the event.
"After six successful years partnering with SCAD for the art poster design contest, we continue to be more impressed by all the outstanding entries," said Jeff Graves, Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon race director. "This certainly made the judging very difficult, which is a testament to all the talented students involved. This year's winning poster will be proudly displayed throughout the weekend-long festivities helping to enhance the image of the race."
Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon
The Publix Georgia Marathon will take place 7 a.m., March 18 at Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. The 26.2 mile and 13.1 mile courses will travel through metro Atlanta's most interesting and historic areas - including the Sweet Auburn district, Inman Park, Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia-Highland and Midtown areas. Along the way, runners will pass landmarks, including the King Historic Site, Carter Center, four college campuses and Piedmont Park.
Race weekend will also include the Cuties Luckie 5K and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, March 17. The event will start and finish at Centennial Olympic Park and run through downtown's Luckie Marietta District. Participants can sign up online at georgiamarathon.com.
