The Savannah College of Art and Design equestrian team remains one of the top university equestrian programs in the country. With strong performances by all riders, SCAD equestrian was named the overall champion team for the National Tournament of Champions 2013-2014, receiving an impressive 67 total points for the series. SCAD won more than 24 national titles in the past decade.
On Saturday, Jan. 25, 20 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association teams from up and down the East Coast competed in the Winter Tournament of Champions. This final show of the tournament series was held at University of Mary Washington's Hazelwild Farm in Fredericksburg, Virginia. SCAD's 36 points sealed the team’s win in the winter tournament and the riders’ victory as national champions.
In addition to team honors, three SCAD riders also placed first in the winter tournament, including Quinn Lowsky (B.F.A. student), who placed first in Novice Equitation Flat; Tori Smolinski (B.F.A. art history student), who placed first in Walk/Trot/Canter Equitation; and Cecilia Langley (B.F.A. accessory design student), who placed first in Walk/Trot Equitation.
Rider Michael Kocher (B.F.A. sound design student) scored two top honors, placing third in Open Equitation Over Fences and sixth in the tournament’s medal class. Kocher has been named IHSA's Region 5 Top Rider for having the highest number of regular seasons points. His score qualified him to compete at IHSA Nationals for the Cacchione Cup. SCAD is the only Georgia university to produce a Cacchione Cup winner, with alumna Kels Bonham (B.A., equestrian studies, 2012) taking the prize in 2012.
Additional students honored include:
From the management of barns and businesses to the organization of competitions and the intricacies of law, careers in the equestrian industry call for savvy professionals who are capable communicators, attuned businesspeople — and who are passionate about all things equine.
