The Savannah College of Art and Design offers degree programs, certificate programs and individual courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels through SCAD-eLearning. Students have the flexibility to further their education through an online delivery method to suit their location, schedule and preference. All courses are developed and taught by SCAD faculty and are offered for academic credit under the authority and accreditation of the college.
SCAD-eLearning programs of study are an extension of the high-quality academic programs and services that are a hallmark of the SCAD experience. After meeting program completion requirements, SCAD-eLearning students earn a SCAD degree, with no distinction made between degree requirements met on campus or online.
SCAD is a member of the Sloan Consortium of institutions committed to providing quality online instruction. Recent awards include the Instructional Technology Council’s Outstanding Online Course Award (2005), Greenhouse Exemplary Course Award Finalist (2006), National Academic Advising Association’s Technology Innovation Certificate of Merit for Online Student Orientation (2006), the United States Distance Learning Association’s Silver Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning Programming for the historic preservation degree program (2006), and Instructional Technology Council’s Outstanding Distance Education Program Award (2007).
SCAD’s focus on learning and its commitment to creating a student-centered online environment allows every eLearning student the opportunity to participate in the life of the college. How a student chooses to become part of the college’s global community is an individual choice, but every SCAD student can be assured that the college is committed to building a dynamic community of artists, designers and scholars across campuses and around the globe.
SCAD’s virtual campus serves as a digital hub for Atlanta-, Savannah- and online-based students. Online students have quick and easy access to a range of resources and services, such as tutoring, career services, technical support, an extensive online library and a dedicated e-services staff.
A learning management system is accessible through the MySCAD digital portal. While course registrations adhere to the normal SCAD calendar of four 10-week quarters, classes are not held at set times. However, students are expected to complete coursework according to a schedule that stipulates due dates and asynchronous online sessions for students and professors to meet, assess and critique work or expand upon discussion board postings.
The SCAD-eLearning department provides many resources to eLearning students to help guide them toward success. SCAD-eLearning staff seek to include distance-learning students in the digital SCAD community. Students are encouraged to communicate and socialize with their peers via course discussions, e-mail and the SCAD-eLearning Club. The digital community provides a forum where distance-learning students can participate in college happenings and discussion through Webcasts, the college newspaper online and other digital programming outlets to ensure that they have a full collegiate experience.
Students in SCAD-eLearning courses are expected to participate in all assignments, examinations and field trips or other special activities as directed by the professor. Attendance is determined by active login time and participation in required activities.
Students who enroll in SCAD-eLearning courses must possess basic computer skills and have regular access to appropriate computer hardware, software and Internet connectivity in order to participate fully in coursework. Learn about SCAD-eLearning technical requirements.
